We first met Doug, the brother of one of our neighbors, a few years ago when we were still in our building process. He had some land in Montana and was planning to build his own home. He was in the research stages at that time and knew the actual start date was a couple years away. The summer of 2009 he was infilling the walls of his cabin. He used Lodgepole Pine harvested from Beetle Kill trees located less than a half mile from the building site. The cordwood is cut to 13" pieces and the mortar walls are 12" giving him an R-value of 17. He will heat the house with the combination of a woodstove and a vacuum tube solar collector system. We love the creativity cordwood masonry building brings out in people. You can see he also incorporated glass bottles and longer pieces for future curtain rods over the windows. He chose the pattern of mostly rounds. Very beautiful indeed! Great job Doug! Click any photo for larger photo gallery views. |
